Maui, Hawaii

Molokini Snorkeling

A crescent of volcanic rock rises about 3 miles off Maui's south coast, and its protected inner cove is one of the clearest places to snorkel in Hawaii. You cannot swim or kayak there. A morning boat gets you in the water before the trade winds build, and the reef rules are strict for good reason.

What can I see?

What to see underwater at Molokini Crater

What you see is the rim of a partly submerged volcanic crater, with a curve that shelters an inner cove from the open channel. Tour operators and guides describe reef fish in numbers inside the cove, and deeper drop-offs on the outer back wall that drift-snorkel trips target. The islet itself is a seabird sanctuary, so you look at it from the water. Fishing, feeding, collecting and landing are prohibited.

  • The inner cove

Subzone A of the conservation district is the sheltered cove on the concave side of the crescent. Most boats moor here, and the water is typically calm and clear on a good morning.

  • The outer back wall

Small boats and some rafts run drift snorkels along the outside of the crescent, where the bottom drops away and current is stronger. Better for confident swimmers on a guided trip.

  • Fish and wildlife

Expect yellow tang, Moorish idol, parrotfish, reef triggerfish and butterflyfish. Spinner dolphins sometimes show up on the crossing, and humpback whales can be seen from December to April. None of this is guaranteed.

When is the best time to go?

Best time to snorkel Molokini Crater

Tours run year-round when the channel allows. Operators and guides point to roughly May to September as the calmest, most consistent stretch, while winter trips often add humpback whales on the crossing. Boats cancel or switch sites when wind or swell is too high.

    • Time of day

Book the earliest departure. Guides recommend 6 to 8 a.m. starts because trade winds build through the day and roughen the crossing and the water. Most morning boats are heading back by late morning.

    • Tide

Tides matter little here; wind and swell decide the day.

    • When to avoid

Skip afternoon trips in windy weather, and days of strong trade wind or big swell, when visibility and comfort both drop. Ask the operator about its cancellation policy before you book.

Can you snorkel here on your own?

    Best with a tour

Molokini is boat only. It sits several miles offshore in an open channel, so private visits mean a charter or your own vessel and a day-use mooring. For most visitors a licensed tour is the way to go. Wear the flotation the crew offers, since current can run on the outer wall.

    How do I get there?

    Getting to Molokini Crater

Molokini is reachable only by boat. Most big catamarans leave Maalaea Harbor, and smaller rafts also run from the Kihei Boat Ramp. You cannot swim, paddle or land. Check in 30 minutes or more before departure.

    Open in Google Maps

    Parking

Parking is at the harbor or ramp you depart from. Maalaea Harbor has lots near the docks, and your operator will tell you where to leave the car. At the Kihei Boat Ramp, parking is limited, so arrive early and follow the sign on your booking.

    Where to get in

You board at the dock or ramp and enter the water from the boat, usually by ladder or slide, over a mooring in the inner cove or along the outer wall.

    By boat

About 20 to 45 by raft or catamaran from Maalaea; shorter from Kihei by raft minutes each way. Boats leave from Maalaea Harbor, Kihei Boat Ramp.

    Molokini crater snorkeling guide

Molokini is the visible rim of a volcanic crater, protected as a state conservation district for decades. Boats tie to day-use moorings in the inner cove and let you snorkel the reef along the crescent. The cove is usually clearer and calmer than the open channel, but the weather decides everything, so be ready for the crew to switch you to another site if the wind is up.

    Molokini snorkel tours

Choose between a large catamaran with a meal and a slide, or a smaller raft that runs faster and drift snorkels the outer wall. Many itineraries add a second stop at Turtle Town or a reef near Makena, but not all do, so read the listing. Prices change often, so check the operator page. Tours here are booked directly with operators.

    Best time to go

Go in the morning, and favor late spring to early fall for the steadiest water. In winter, humpback whales add a bonus on the crossing but swell and wind cancel more trips.

    FAQ

    Molokini Crater questions

Can you snorkel Molokini without a boat?

No. Molokini is a crescent islet in the channel about 3 miles off Maui's south coast and can be reached only by boat. Landing on the islet is prohibited because it is a seabird sanctuary.

Where do Molokini tours leave from?

Most leave from Maalaea Harbor on Maui's south-central coast, and some smaller trips use the Kihei Boat Ramp. Your booking names the dock or slip, so check it before the day.

How long is the boat ride to Molokini?

Guides give a range of about 20 to 45 minutes depending on the boat and departure point. Rafts are faster than big catamarans. A full trip is usually 4 to 5 hours including a second stop.

What is the best time of day to snorkel Molokini?

Early morning. Trade winds build through the day, and morning boats see calmer water and a smoother crossing. Book a 6 to 8 a.m. departure if you can.

What are the rules at Molokini Shoal?

It is a Marine Life Conservation District. No taking or injuring marine life, no feeding fish, no removing coral or sand, no landing on the islet, and no commercial mooring without a permit. Maui County also requires mineral sunscreen.

    Is Molokini good for beginners?

The inner cove is typically calm, and boats supply flotation and a briefing, so it suits beginners on a guided trip. Wind and current can change that, so ask the crew about the plan for the day.
