Destin Jetties (East Pass)
Rock jetties at East Pass hold the best fish life in Destin. Go at slack high tide, because current runs on the outgoing tide.

Photo: Ebyabe, CC BY-SA 3.0Destin is emerald Gulf water over sand and limestone rock, not coral reef. The East Pass jetties hold the fish, Crab Island is the shallow party sandbar, and summer water feels like a warm bath.
Most Destin snorkeling happens at the East Pass jetties, a long rock pile at the mouth of Choctawhatchee Bay. Sheepshead, snapper, redfish and the occasional barracuda hang around the rocks, along with octopus and hermit crabs. Slack high tide brings the cleanest Gulf water. The outgoing tide adds current and cuts visibility.
Crab Island is a very different outing. It is a shallow sandbar in the bay, reached only by boat, with water about 1 to 4 ft deep. It suits beginners and kids, but it is crowded and has more to do with floats than fish. Most guided snorkel trips combine the jetties with dolphin watching.
This is not a reef. Expect green Gulf water, visibility that ranges from about 20 to 80 ft by tide and location, and summer water in the 80s F. Read the red tide and storm notes below before you go.

The classic grey dolphin, common off Florida, California and Hawaii. You usually see them from the boat on the way to the reef.
Guardian rule: Watch from at least 50 yards. Never feed, chase or swim toward dolphins.
Tursiops truncatus
A long, silver predator that hangs motionless near the surface and watches snorkelers with curiosity. It looks fierce but rarely bothers people.
Guardian rule: Take off shiny jewelry, which can look like a fish flash.
Sphyraena barracuda
A master of disguise that changes color and texture to match the reef. Look for a pile of shells outside a hole, which often marks its den.
Octopus cyanea
Tiny fish that wrap their tails around seagrass and sponges. Patient snorkelers find them on calm, shallow Florida sites.
Hippocampus
A big, reddish brown turtle with a heavy head built for crushing crabs and conch. Florida beaches host most of the loggerhead nesting in the US.
Guardian rule: Stay at least 10 ft away. Never touch or ride a turtle.

June to September has the warmest water, calmest Gulf and the most tours. Spring and fall are workable but cooler. Winter water is in the low 60s F and not much fun without a suit. Summer afternoon thunderstorms are common, so book morning trips.
Morning, before storms build and boat traffic peaks.
Avoid the outgoing tide at the jetties, days with a red tide advisory, and any day with thunderstorms in the forecast.

Red tide is a bloom of the alga Karenia brevis. It can cause fish kills and irritate eyes and lungs. FWC publishes weekly statewide status and an interactive sampling map, so check it before you travel. Blooms are most reported on the southwest Gulf coast, but Panhandle beaches can be affected, so do not assume. Summer in Destin also brings fast afternoon thunderstorms and, from June to November, hurricane season. Book morning trips and have a weather backup day.
Florida defines a diver to include anyone in the water with a face mask and snorkel. Display a divers-down warning device in the area where you swim, except in areas customarily used only for swimming. Stay within 100 ft of it on rivers, inlets and navigation channels, and within 300 ft elsewhere. Boat operators must slow when within those distances. A flag only works if you stay near it, so tow a float with a flag when you snorkel the jetties.
Satellite-based averages run about 60 F in Jan, 61 F in Feb, 64 F in Mar, 71 F in Apr, 77 F in May, 83 F in Jun, 85 F in Jul, 86 F in Aug, 83 F in Sep, 77 F in Oct, 69 F in Nov and 63 F in Dec. Sources disagree by a few degrees. A 3 mm suit is comfortable from Nov to Apr.
Gulf water brings boat traffic, currents and seasonal algae. Know these before you go.
State law treats anyone in the water with a mask and snorkel as a diver. Display a divers-down warning device. Stay within 100 ft of it on rivers, inlets and channels, and within 300 ft on other waters. Boats must slow when they come within those distances. Penalties are civil infractions under s. 327.73. Official rule

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission publishes statewide red tide status. The Oct 16, 2026 update reported only background levels in Southwest Florida samples and no Panhandle details, so check the interactive map for Okaloosa and Walton counties before you swim. Avoid water near discoloration, dead fish or respiratory irritation. Official rule
Henderson Beach is an important loggerhead nesting area. Keep lights low at night and give turtles space. Official rule
How snorkelers protect reefs · Choosing a reef-safe sunscreen

The East Pass jetties have the most fish, best at slack high tide and with a flag. Crab Island is a shallow sandbar for beginners. Henderson Beach State Park is calm Gulf beach with fewer fish.
The sculptures sit in 58 to 60 ft of water off Grayton Beach, about 25 miles east of Destin. It is mainly a dive site, and sources disagree on whether snorkelers can see it from the surface. Ask a local operator.
Yes. Florida law counts snorkelers as divers. Display a divers-down device and stay within 100 ft of it in channels and 300 ft in open water.
It can be. Check the FWC statewide red tide status and sampling map before you go. Skip the water if you see discolored water, dead fish or have breathing irritation.
