Swim With Manatees in Crystal River

Slip into 72 F spring water and float beside wild West Indian manatees. Crystal River is the one place in the US where you can. Winter is the peak, and the rules are strict because the animals come first.

Why snorkel Crystal River?

Snorkeling in Crystal River at a glance

Kings Bay, at the edge of the town of Crystal River on Florida's Gulf coast, is fed by about 30 springs that hold the water near 72 F all year. When the Gulf cools in winter, hundreds of manatees move in to stay warm, and Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge protects them. It is the only place in North America where the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service allows people to snorkel with wild manatees.

The swim is a quiet one. You float at the surface, keep your hands to yourself, and let curious manatees come to you. Most visitors go with a guided tour from a marina in Kings Bay, where guides know which springs are open and where the animals are resting. The busiest and coldest days, usually December to February, bring the most manatees, but also the most boats and the most closures.

A few areas are marked sanctuaries from November 15 to March 31 and are closed to all activity. Know those lines before you get in. The refuge is clear that observing without touching is the whole point, so arrive early, listen to your guide, and leave the manatees where you found them.

When is the best time to go?

Best time to snorkel in Crystal River

Dec to Feb has the most manatees because cold Gulf water pushes them into the 72 F springs. Nov and Mar are fine but less reliable. From Apr to mid Nov manatees are fewer, yet the springs stay open and a few animals usually remain.

    • Time of day

Early morning. Manatees tend to be resting in the springs and boat traffic is lowest. Cold, calm mornings are the best of all.

    • When to avoid

Warm, sunny weekends in Mar when manatees drift back to the Gulf, and midday holiday crowds.

    Crystal River manatee season

Manatee season runs Nov 15 to Mar 31, which is also when the refuge puts up its marked sanctuaries. As the Gulf cools, manatees move into Kings Bay for the warm spring water, and counts peak on the coldest days from Dec to Feb. From Apr 1 to Nov 14 the sanctuaries are not in force and the springs stay open for snorkeling, but fewer manatees are around. The refuge's winter season is also when its ranger-led programs run daily at Three Sisters Springs.

Best time to see manatees in Crystal River

Pick a cold weekday morning in Jan or Feb and book the first tour of the day. Manatees pile up in the springs, boats are few and you get the quiet water you want. If the Gulf is warm, manatees disperse and your odds drop. Late afternoon can be fine, but the light and the crowds are worse. Winter is also the coldest time to be in the water, so the wetsuit your tour supplies matters.

    Three Sisters Springs

Three Sisters Springs is the refuge's showpiece, a group of springs at the north end of Kings Bay that manatees use as a winter refuge. The refuge protects it as the last undeveloped spring habitat in the bay, and the boardwalk is the most popular winter spot for watching from above. In-water rules change with the season and conditions, and parts of it are marked as sanctuary from Nov 15 to Mar 31. Plan on checking the refuge's current notices, and let your guide decide where you swim.

    Protect the reef

    Reef-safe rules at Crystal River

Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge sets the rules, and rangers and the state enforce them. The refuge asks every visitor to watch its Manatee Manners video before getting in.

    • Passive observation only

Float at the surface, stay calm and let the manatee decide what to do. The Fish and Wildlife Service encourages watching from a distance, at the surface, without initiating contact. Official rule

    • No touching, chasing or feeding

In all Kings Bay waters, including Three Sisters Springs, it is illegal to chase, touch or disturb resting or feeding manatees, dive onto them, corner them, stand on them, separate a mother from her calf, or feed them. Official rule

    • Sanctuaries are closed Nov 15 to Mar 31

During manatee season the refuge sets up marked sanctuaries that are closed to all activity. Snorkelers may not enter them or go ashore there. Learn what the buoys and signs look like from your guide. Official rule

    • Three Sisters Springs can close

The refuge can close in-water access to Three Sisters when cold weather or high tides bring manatees into the springs. Check the refuge's current notices before you plan around it, and expect your guide to adjust. Official rule

    • Stay off the bottom

Walking or kicking on the bottom stirs up sediment and cuts visibility for everyone. Float and keep your fins up. Official rule

    • Scuba at Three Sisters

Scuba diving at Three Sisters Spring is allowed only from Apr 1 to Nov 14. Snorkeling is allowed there year-round, outside the sanctuaries. Official rule

    • Report a sick or injured manatee

Call the FWC wildlife emergency hotline at 1-888-404-3922 for a sick, injured, dead, tagged or orphaned manatee. Official rule

    FAQ

    Crystal River snorkeling questions

Can you swim with manatees in Crystal River?

Yes. Crystal River is the only place in North America where U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service rules allow people to snorkel with wild manatees. You must follow passive observation: float at the surface and never chase, touch or feed them. Most visitors go with a guided tour.

When is manatee season in Crystal River?

Nov 15 to Mar 31 is manatee season, when the refuge enforces its marked sanctuaries. Manatees are most numerous on the coldest days from Dec to Feb. You can still snorkel the springs from Apr 1 to Nov 14, but expect fewer animals.

What is the best time of day to swim with manatees?

Early morning on a cold day. Boat traffic is light, the water is calm and manatees are often resting in the springs. Midday and warm afternoons bring more boats and fewer animals.

Can I touch a manatee in Crystal River?

No. It is illegal to touch, chase, feed or separate manatees in Kings Bay, including Three Sisters Springs. Passive observation means you float and let the manatee come to you. If it swims away, let it go.

Can I snorkel at Three Sisters Springs on my own?

In-water access depends on the season and on refuge closures, and sanctuaries are closed to all activity from Nov 15 to Mar 31. Check the refuge's current notices first. A guided tour is simplest because the guide knows which areas are open.

    Do I need a wetsuit?

Yes, in winter. The springs stay near 72 F, but you float almost motionless for a long time and mornings are cold. Most tours include a wetsuit, mask and snorkel.
