Photo: Sharon Hahn Darlin, CC BY 2.0Shallow reefs sit a short boat ride offshore, and on the seafloor a bronze Jesus stands waiting. Key Largo is the Upper Keys' snorkel capital, with coral restoration you can swim right over.
Key Largo calls itself the dive capital of the world, but its best-known reefs are made for snorkelers. The Atlantic side of the island is a chain of shallow spur-and-groove reefs inside Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Most sit a short boat ride from the dock, and some, like Grecian Rocks and Carysfort, have coral heads close to the surface.
The headline stop is the Christ of the Abyss statue at Key Largo Dry Rocks, a nine-foot bronze figure standing in about 20 to 25 ft of water. Around it you will see parrotfish, sergeant majors, sea fans, brain coral and sometimes a turtle. Nearly all good snorkeling here is boat-based, so the main decision is which operator and which reef. Choose one on NOAA's Blue Star list and you also help keep the reef in good shape.

Guardian rule: Do not stand on the statue base or the surrounding reef.
A branching coral with thick, antler-like arms that once built the shallow reef crests of the Florida Keys. It is now threatened and the focus of major restoration work.
Acropora palmata
Rounded coral heads covered in winding grooves that look like a brain. Common on Florida reefs and slow growing, so a big head can be centuries old.
Diploria, Pseudodiploria, Colpophyllia
Purple, lacy soft corals that sway in the current on Florida and Caribbean reefs. They face across the current to filter food from the water.
Gorgonia
Colorful grazers with fused, beak-like teeth. You can hear them crunch on coral rock, and much of the white sand on tropical beaches passes through them.
Scaridae
A deep blue surgeonfish that grazes Florida reefs in roving schools. Juveniles are bright yellow and change to blue as they grow.
Acanthurus coeruleus
A small yellow and silver damselfish with five black bars. Bold and curious, it is often the first fish to swim up to you on a Florida reef.
Abudefduf saxatilis
An electric blue and yellow angelfish with a blue crown spot on its forehead. One of the most photographed fish in the Florida Keys.
Holacanthus ciliaris
A long, silver predator that hangs motionless near the surface and watches snorkelers with curiosity. It looks fierce but rarely bothers people.
Guardian rule: Take off shiny jewelry, which can look like a fish flash.
Sphyraena barracuda
Yellow fish with blue or bronze stripes that hang in big, slow schools under ledges and around coral heads on Florida reefs.

by John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park (park concession)
The park's own boat runs several snorkel trips a day, about 2.5 hours with roughly 1.5 hours of reef time. A safety vest is provided and must be worn. Mask, snorkel and fins can be rented.
The park is on NOAA's Blue Star list. The captain picks the reef by weather and sea state, so Christ of the Abyss is not guaranteed.
by Silent World Dive Center
Daily group trips to two sites, including the Christ of the Abyss statue at Key Largo Dry Rocks and a shallow reef, with about 45 minutes in the water at each. Snorkel gear, snacks and reef-safe sunscreen are included.
Silent World is a Blue Star operator and partners with Coral Restoration Foundation. Reef-safe sunscreen is provided on board.

For a first trip pick a boat that visits Key Largo Dry Rocks for the statue and Grecian Rocks for the shallow coral. Carysfort adds an elkhorn field and lighthouse. Molasses and French Reef are deeper and better for confident swimmers on calm days.
Most shops run two-stop trips of about 2.5 to 3 hours. The park runs its own boat from Pennekamp, and Silent World runs three daily departures to two reefs including the statue. Check gear, group size, and whether snorkels are included.
John Pennekamp rents masks, snorkels and fins with a refundable deposit and provides vests on its tours. Many boat operators include gear in the ticket. Wetsuits are worth renting in winter or if you chill easily.
The reefs off Key Largo are in Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, with extra protection in Sanctuary Preservation Areas.

Coral nurseries and reef restoration in the Upper Keys
CRF grows staghorn and elkhorn coral in offshore nurseries off Key Largo and plants them on degraded reefs. It runs public snorkel and dive programs with local shops and takes volunteers.

Most visitors rate Key Largo Dry Rocks, with the Christ of the Abyss statue, and Grecian Rocks, with shallow coral, as the best first-time stops. Carysfort is a strong choice for elkhorn coral. All are reached by boat from the Key Largo area.
Barely. The park's Cannon Beach near the marina is the main shore option and has little coral. The famous reefs are miles offshore, so book a guided boat trip.
Not always. Pennekamp rents gear for a refundable deposit, and many tours include a mask and fins, though snorkels are sometimes sold at check-in. Ask the operator when you book.
April to August is usually best for calm, warm water. Winter cold fronts cause chop and cancellations. Late summer and fall bring hurricane season.
