Channel Islands Snorkeling

Float over kelp forests, with orange garibaldi below and sea lions in the shallows, then step back onto an island with no cars, shops or hotels. Channel Islands National Park is the Galapagos of California. You arrive by boat and swim in cold, protected water.

Why snorkel Channel Islands National Park?

Snorkeling in Channel Islands National Park at a glance

A day at the Channel Islands is a boat day, and that is part of the thrill. The park sits off Ventura and Oxnard. The National Park Service names Santa Barbara Island, Anacapa and the eastern end of Santa Cruz as the best islands for snorkelers. Santa Rosa and San Miguel are windier and rougher, so they are not for beginners.

The kelp forest is the draw. At Scorpion Anchorage on Santa Cruz you walk into the water off a cobblestone beach and swim with garibaldi, California sheephead and opaleye, often with a guide. At Anacapa Landing Cove the kelp starts near the dock, with sea lions nearby. Santa Barbara Island is remote, and boat service there is currently suspended.

The water runs about 55 to 70 F, so plan on a wetsuit and a hood. The islands have no lifeguards, no food for sale and little or no drinking water. Bring everything you need, and take nothing out of the water, since much of this coast is a no-take marine reserve.

    Which islands to visit

Start with Scorpion Anchorage on Santa Cruz: guided snorkeling, gear rental and a gentle beach entry. Anacapa Landing Cove is the pick for a self-guided day if you can handle a ladder and about 150 stairs with your gear. Santa Barbara Island has no public boat service right now. Santa Rosa and San Miguel are windy and not recommended for novices.

    Getting there

Island Packers runs the boats from Ventura Harbor and Oxnard. Its Santa Cruz page puts the Ventura to Scorpion Anchorage ride at about 1 hour, though Channel Islands Adventure Company says about 1.5 hours and notes a 9 a.m. daily departure from Ventura. Anacapa trips leave from both harbors. Santa Barbara Island is about 2.5 to 3 hours when service runs. Island Packers offices: 1691 Spinnaker Dr, Ventura, and 3550 Harbor Blvd, Oxnard. Book ahead.

    Kayak and snorkel tours

Channel Islands Adventure Company runs guided snorkeling and a sea cave kayak plus snorkel tour at Scorpion Anchorage in summer. Wetsuits are included. You buy the Island Packers ferry separately.

Kelp forest, cold water and no services

The forests of giant kelp are the show, but the water is cold, with no lifeguards, no shops and no food or drinking water on Scorpion or Anacapa. Treat it as a wilderness day.

    Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary

NOAA's sanctuary covers 1,470 square miles of ocean around the northern islands. Inside it, marine reserves protect the kelp forest from fishing, so fish are bolder and kelp is healthier.

    Protect the reef

Reef-safe rules at Channel Islands National Park

Much of the water around the islands is a marine reserve, and the park and state add closures to protect birds and seals. Snorkeling and swimming are allowed in reserves. Taking anything is not.

    • No take in marine reserves

In the park's marine reserves it is unlawful to injure, damage, take or possess any living, geological or cultural marine resource. That includes shells and rocks. Limited harvest is allowed only in the two marine conservation areas. Official rule

    • Anacapa closures

West Anacapa is closed to protect nesting brown pelicans, and the water off its north side is closed January 1 to October 31. Middle Anacapa is closed except for ranger-led tours. Official rule

    • Wildlife and drones

Do not feed, collect or disturb wildlife. Flying a drone in the park is prohibited without written approval from the superintendent. Official rule

    • Safety

No lifeguards are on duty. Use a buddy, leave a float plan with someone ashore, stay clear of skiffs making surf landings and avoid sea caves that can flood suddenly. Official rule
