Poipu Beach Snorkeling

A sandy spit shelters a shallow bay here, a lifeguard is on duty every day, and green sea turtles often rest on the sand. Poipu Beach Park is the easy first swim on Kauai. It is also a monk seal beach, so the best behavior is giving wildlife room.

What can I see?

What to see underwater at Poipu Beach Park

A sand spit (tombolo) splits the beach into two sheltered sides, and each snorkels differently. Most of the life is in the first 100 yards from shore. The water runs about 1 to 12 ft deep, so you stay shallow the whole way. Look for green sea turtles, Moorish idols, saddle wrasse and parrotfish, and a Hawaiian monk seal may be resting nearby. Give any seal or turtle plenty of room.

  • West side

Deeper water with larger coral masses, up to about 12 ft. Listed as the better side for fish and coral.

  • East side

Shallower and calmer, with fewer fish. Good for small children and first-time snorkelers who want to stand up.

  • Turtles and seals

Green sea turtles are common in the water and on the beach. Hawaiian monk seals haul out here from time to time.

  • Reef fish

Moorish idols, saddle wrasse, sergeant majors, yellowfin goatfish, surgeonfish and parrotfish, with small zebra morays in the rocks.

When is the best time to go?

Best time to snorkel Poipu Beach Park

Poipu works most of the year and is the default choice from October to April, when north shore beaches are rough. In summer, south swells can add surf and stir up the bay, so check the surf report that morning.

    • Time of day

Go early. Water is calmer and the lot is easier before mid-morning.

    • Tide

Very shallow reef on the east side is easier at mid to high tide, so you do not scrape the coral.

    • When to avoid

Skip days with big surf or a posted warning, and any day the rip current along the spit looks strong.

Can you snorkel here on your own?

    Yes, on your own

One of Kauai's best beaches to snorkel without a tour. Lifeguards are on duty daily, parking is free and nearby, and the water is shallow. Weak swimmers should wear a flotation vest and stay near the sand.

Swim level: Calm water, weak swimmers ok with a float

Reef-safe rules at Poipu Beach Park

Poipu is a county beach park with protected wildlife, so the rules are mostly about distance.

    • Monk seals: stay back

NOAA asks everyone to keep at least 50 ft from a Hawaiian monk seal on land and in water, and farther from a mother and pup. One local guide advises 100 ft, so give extra room. A seal resting on the sand may be marked off with ropes by volunteers. Report disturbances to the NOAA hotline at 888-256-9840. Official rule

    • Sea turtles: 10 feet

Stay at least 10 ft from turtles, never touch or chase them and never stand on one resting on the sand. Official rule

    • Reef-safe sunscreen

Hawaii law bans the sale of sunscreen with oxybenzone or octinoxate. A rash guard protects both you and the coral better than any lotion. Official rule
