Bahia Honda Snorkeling

Walk off a sandy beach into shallow, buoyed water, no boat needed. Bahia Honda is the Keys' easiest way in. Decide whether the shore fish are enough, or join the park's own boat to Looe Key. The old railroad bridge makes a fine backdrop, though the channel beneath it is no place for a casual swim.

What to see underwater at Bahia Honda State Park

Shore snorkeling here is gentle and modest. Expect seagrass, rocks and small, young fish rather than coral. The most life sits on the rocks and breakwater on the bay side, where snappers, grunts and sergeant majors gather, with the odd butterflyfish or parrotfish. Poke around the grass and you may find a spiny lobster or a scorpionfish. Visibility can be poor when sediment is up. For living reef, take the park boat to Looe Key.

  • Calusa Beach

A small bay-side beach at the foot of the old bridge. A buoyed, lifeguarded snorkel zone runs along about 200 m of beach with water up to about 6 ft. Enter at the eastern end near the rocks.

  • Loggerhead Beach

On the southern shore of the key. One guide suggests it for better snorkeling when the sea is calm. Details are thin, so ask a ranger about conditions that day.

  • Old bridge

A section of the Flagler railroad bridge you can walk out on for views. Snorkel near it with great care because of the current below.

  • Looe Key boat trip

The park concession runs a three-hour trip to Looe Key reef in the sanctuary, with about 1.5 hours of snorkel time.

Can you snorkel here on your own?

    Yes, on your own

Yes at the buoyed Calusa Beach zone, which is shallow, lifeguarded and good for beginners in calm weather. Outside the bay-side beach you need a dive flag. Do not swim toward the channel under the old bridge, where the current runs strong. Skip it in rough or windy conditions.

Swim level: Calm water, weak swimmers ok with a float
